Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery in 1822, she escaped and became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, helping hundreds of enslaved people to freedom. Tubman also served as a spy and nurse during the Civil War and fought for women's suffrage.
